The Voice Work Institute

The Voice Work Institute provides internationally recognized courses based on the extensive and comprehensive approach to vocal expression I have evolved over the past thirty years. Through this work, I have earned my reputation as a world-leading expert in the field of Voice Work.

I have had a particularly notable influence on the fields of Voice Acting, Singing Training, and Voice Therapy. That is because each of these domains shares a central common concern with authentic expression and communication.

Such expression is innately psychological as well as practical, because the voice, as a medium of authentic communication, is at once an inner and outer phenomenon.

My influence results partly from the psycho-kinaesthetic model of Voice Work that I have developed for working practically and psychologically with the inner and outer voice.

When working with the external voice, this model shows how the human voice comprises a set of primary acoustic ingredients that combine in varying proportion to produce unique vocal characterisations.

By mastering the skill to produce these ingredients, every person can develop flexible vocal expression. This approach is exhilarating, inspiring to learn, and widely used.

Voice actors and public speakers depend upon it to get maximum dexterity from their vocal instrument. Singers use it to enrich the tonality of their voice. Coaches and teachers use it to help clients expand their expressive vocal range. Therapists use it to encourage emotive expression in distressed patients.

When working with the inner voice, my work illuminates how our cognition and imagination rely upon perpetual dialogue between a cast of inner voices. Each of these interior voices gives expression to a characteristic of our Self, which we seek to communicate through our external voice.

This framework of tools and techniques has proven equally useful whether your aim is to vocalise characterisations for a film, release the voice from restraint, or enhance your ability to attract positive attention from those to whom you speak.

Consequently, I have taught classical singers at the Royal Opera, actors at the Royal Shakespeare Company, and a host of contemporary vocalists, writers, voice over artists, and movie actors, as well as leaders in the corporate sector who rely on their presentation skills, and clinicians who assist people with critical needs.

The courses I provide through the Voice Work Institute therefore meet both professional and personal needs, by combining the skills of external acoustic communication, the creativity of vocal arts, and the principles of individual psychology. Meanwhile, they are highly respected as a benchmark across multiple industries around the world.

Sometimes, on a single course, I have taught speech therapists and laryngologists, classical and rock singers, psychologists and attorneys, politicians and ambassadors, priests and telephone counsellors, forensic scientists and diplomatic envoys. In addition, many participants come for personal not professional reasons, and often they do not have a specific field of traditionally recognised work. Yet through these courses, many find a calling, a vocation, and a purpose.

On a creative level, many participants in my courses have gone on to initiate innovative projects, publish books, make movies and records, revision their life-style, and pursue their passion.

On a therapeutic level, my methods have helped people recover from abuse, overcome trauma, calm anxiety, lift depression, end addiction, and stand up for their needs.

On a social level, my work has brought communities together to heal conflict, break silence, and find voices of determination and influence.

On a professional level, my programs have graduated many people who enjoy a successful career in their chosen field, where they draw upon my teachings.

My work is the subject of television and radio features, magazine and newspaper articles, books and academic articles. Meanwhile, my name is associated with innovation and integrity in multiple professional circles across the world.
